Perennial Plants: Flowers, Seeds, Gardening And Plant Care

Gardening requires careful planning in order to ensure that there is consistent color, fragrance, texture, and beauty. Gardening involves a lot of decisions; shall one choose annuals, biennials, or perennial plants? Annuals certainly provide lush seasonal color to a garden, but by years end most of them die and must be replaced.
Biennials are plants that take two years to complete their life cycle and then they die and must be replaced. In contrast, perennial plants have life cycles longer than two years and some even live up to 1,000 years.
Perennial plants are divided into two main groups: woody and herbaceous. Herbaceous plants dominate most ecosystems and include many species from ferns to orchids, while woody perennial plants are all those that develop a woody stem, like trees. Perennial plants can be grown in every type of lighting conditions from shade to full sunlight.
Many Perennial plants are flowering plants and come in more colors than Crayola. Perennial flowers such as the Aquilegia 'Clementine Blue' features a brilliant blue flower. This plant is vigorous and loves partial shade. Its flowers may be cut continuously without compromising the bloom. Another variety of Aquilegia, the 'Clementine Salmon Rose' has blooms with soft, rich salmon and purple colors that would have inspired Monet to immediately start painting. Plant care for these two varieties of Columbines only require a pruning each fall for them to grow back even larger the following year.
Some gardeners prefer to plant perennial seeds in their garden. In order to keep their garden growing and blooming year round careful gardeners select perennial plants that will bloom in spring such as Calla Lily Captain Reno with deep purple flowers, the Bird of Paradise, and the Blueberry Darrow. Summer perennial flowers include the pure pink Astilbe Rheinland and the Astilbe Purple Lance. Fall perennial plants also provide beautiful color. Fall blooms include the Aster Wonder of Staffa which has blue and yellow colors that would appeal to UCLA alumni and the Blue Plumbago.
Perennial plants are also found in species of vines to cover that trellis or wedding arch with beautiful and fragrant white Chilean Jasmine or the graceful Clematis 'Rosy O' Grady.' Of course every garden needs trees, and all trees are perennial plants of the woody group. Popular types include fruiting trees such as apples and cherries, shade trees such as maples, or even trees that can grow in a pot such as a banana tree or an olive tree. Trees also require regular plant care like all perennials, so it is important not to forget to prune and care for them.
Perhaps the most popular of all perennial plants is the rose. Writers for centuries have waxed poetic about the rose, painters have honored them, and lovers have given them to spark romance. Roses were even symbols for the goddesses of ancient Greece. Rose colors have even been assigned special meaning as symbols including dying love (yellow), deep love and respect (red), grace (pink), and innocence (white). There are over 100 species of wild roses and they grow as shrubs or climbers in every color of the rainbow and more, even black that symbolizes devotion.
Perennial plants are everywhere and some have longer life spans than human beings. The knowledgeable gardener chooses the right perennial plants for the right locations to produce beautiful flowers with an endless variety of colors and fragrances. Perennial plants are the right choice for a beautiful landscape.
